Online Outage Reporting Now Available

Just in time for spring storms, you can now report your power outage via our website.  The surge in smart phones and tablets has demanded a fast, easy way to report your power outage, and to track the status of our power restoration efforts.

Online outage reporting requires you to enter your account number, or meter number, or a phone number we have on file for you.  If you enter a number that doesn’t match our system, you will receive an error message.  This is a good time to confirm your primary phone number(s) with our office.  When submitting your outage you will also have the ability to request notification when your power is restored either via a text message or an email.

MVEC Receives Smart Grid Visionary Award
VisionaryAward-smallANAMOSA, Iowa, Nov. 12, 2012 – Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC), Anamosa, recently received the Smart Grid Visionary Award at the Rural Smart Grid Summit held in San Diego.

The Summit invited 120 electric cooperatives from across the nation to join participating vendors to discuss the latest technological advances and solutions in smart grid technologies.  During the Summit, the Smart Grid Visionary Award was presented to the rural electric cooperative that is considered an early adopter of smart grid technology and who has successfully deployed at least one smart grid project with plans to further develop the technology over the next three to five years.

Over the past 14 years, MVEC has maximized the use of smart grid technologies to enhance the day to day operating efficiencies of the cooperative and to improve service reliability to its’ membership.  Continuing the process, MVEC is currently in the early phases of implementing a meter data management system that ties to a member web portal.  According to Jeremy Richert, Director of Engineering, “Managing all of the data collected thru technologies, and development of the portal, offers members the ability to make informed decisions regarding their energy use”.  Additional portal features include online bill payment and the ability to request alerts or reminders on issues regarding their account.

“Our members tell us service reliability is important to them, so we are pleased to announce this technology has reduced power outage times by 38%, making us one of the most reliable utilities in Iowa”, says CEO Jim Lauzon.  Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative is a member-owned utility that distributes electricity to over 16,000 homes, farms and businesses in Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson and Jones counties and portions of five surrounding counties.

Your Account Number has Changed!

MVEC implemented a computer software update that forced a change to account numbers for all MVEC members. Effective immediately, your account number now has an additional zero in the third position from the right as follows:

Sample former account number: 1234501
New account number: 12345001

If you use an electronic banking process to pay your bills, please let your financial institution know of this change. When reporting power outages or referencing your account in other ways, remember to add the extra zero. Your December bill will reflect your new account number

Know How to Calculate your Energy Use
Can you read your electric bill?  What does it cost to keep all those electronics in your home operating each month? We want to help you understand and calculate a kilowatt hour.

Ten 100 watt lightbulbs operating for one hour is equivalent to one kilowatt hour, or ten cents on average.  One 1500 watt electric space heater, operating for one hour will average fifteen cents. Operating it every day for a full month could add more than one hundred dollars to your energy bill.

Use this simple worksheet [click here] to help you calculate energy use and better understand your bill.  It’s easy - wattage, times the daily hours of operation, divided by 1000.  Use $0.11 as your guide for cost of each kilowatt hour.  [click here]  to see a sample list of appliance wattages.

Still not sure where your energy is being used?  Purchase a kilowatt monitor from us for $26.75 and plug your appliance into it to see a recording of what it costs to operate.  That old refrigerator in the garage is probably costing you more than a trip to the store to purchase a cold drink.  You can also call us to request a copy of your load data as taken directly from your meter.  You can see hourly, daily or monthly energy use
